The Story:He put the car in park and with that cute dimpled grin she adored pointed straight at her, he turned off the engine. As soon as the radio silenced, the forest noises seemed to envelope them with late summer buzzing insects and the hoots of owls who hunted them. As their eyes grew accustomed to the dark, the sky seemed to explode with stars.

She was uneasy, being so close to the edge of the abandoned graveyard. The thick and unfathomably dark forest surrounding them, made her feel caged in. He slid and arm around her and she snuggled in close. His soft varsity jacket smelling so like him, warm and safe that soon the foreboding thoughts of the dark woods and decrepit graveyard were slipping from her mind. Softly gripping her chin, he tilted her mouth up towards his. Just as he was slowly leaning towards her, something hit the rusting metal fence surrounding the graveyard just ahead of them. She jumped, her heart thundering.

“Relax”, he told her in his smooth teasing drawl. “It was just a deer.” He started to lean back in, whispering some nonsense things that were meant to be comforting when another crash sounded, this time behind them. The forest noises went silent. Now even he started to feel uneasy. He fumbled around for the headlights when something hit the side of their car. He flicked on the lights and there standing directly in the flood of the lights was a person. It took a few seconds for the wrongness of the person to sink in. Its posture was not quite right, its color was not quite right, its clothes were not quite right. The not quite rightness of him turned into a guttural horror as it began to run messily towards that car. Her boyfriend turned the key in the ignition and slammed his foot onto the gas. They flew forward, right into the not quite right thing in front of them. The car slammed into the figure and it flew over the hood. For a brief second as the windshield shattered, they were blinded but still speeding forward until with the screech of metal and a flash of sparks, they were stopped. As the cloud of dust cleared, to their terror, they saw that they had crashed into the corner of the decorative metal fence surrounding the graveyard. Her boyfriend tried to reverse and the tires spun. He tried forward and the tires spun.

“I think I’m hung up on the metal” he told her. “I have to go out there”. She begged him not too. “It will just be a minute. I have to look.”

“What about that thing?” she wailed.

“It has to be dead.” he said, not sounding at all convinced. They looked behind them but could see nothing beyond the pathetic dim red glow of the rear lights. Not meeting her eyes he said, “I’ll be quick, just 60 seconds. Lock the door until I’m done.” He took a second to steel steel his courage and it one quick gracefully movement, left the car. She slammed the lock down, squeezed her eyes shut, balled her fists, and began to count. She got to 60, then 65, 70, 75. Just as the panic was beginning to spill over something hit the window. She shrieked and whirled at the sound only to see her boyfriend with his hands on the window. Thanking every star in that vast sky, she leaned over the unlocked the door.

As he slid into the driver’s seat, he sat still with his head hanging slightly. She reached to touch his shoulder and he turned his head to look at her, the expression on his face was not quite right.
